Stopped in for lunch and sure glad we did. What a great little place. Friendly and super nice staff. The pulled pork was super yummy! Great side choices also. I had the mac and cheese and it was super cheesy. My friend had the Cuban (who orders a Cuban at a BBQ place?), he said it was great! It's their pulled pork with Carolina Gold sauce for the mustard. There are 4 BBQ sauce choices on the table, original, honey, hot and sassy, and the Carolina gold. All had great flavors. You order your food, sit down and food is out really quick. Extra bonus, was told they will be having specials soon! Something extra to look forward to. Will definitely be stopping in again!

Hands down the best bbq. The smoked corn beef is out of this world delicious--so moist & flavorful that it falls apart and melts in your mouth. Don't even get me started on the freakin' Kansas City bbq baked beans!! Could drink a bowl of those. So good. I want seconds already. Did the pick 2 meats w 2 sides and that was about $13.50. Yum, yum, and more yum.

Painted on the outside of the building, it says: "Best BBQ in America!" Very funny. I think this place is called Champions BBQ because the sauce bottles are Champion's, and when they answer the phone that is the name that they say. However, they are also known as Fred Fleming's BBQ. The door is wide open, letting all of the flies inside this little shack of a business. As my Pappy used to say, "It ain't country without flies!!!" But, I don't see a Pappy at this location, but rather the grandson running the business. Who is in his late 20's or early 30's, totally destroyed by 1990's partying --- wandering around the dining area and answering the phone, adding his own colorful humor to the business. Slightly annoying, a little too familiar, drunk or not, and almost charming in his own way. Either way, the old folks eat it up. You order at the counter, the menu is on the wall. Then you choose your seat and they will bring the food out to you. We bussed our own table. The meat is GOOD; moist brisket, amazing sausage, and better ribs. From what I hear, the chicken wings are to die for, but they were sold out when I was here. The sides are decent, and somewhat interesting. For example, the BBQ beans are oniony, yet have tender pieces of apple. The green beans and collards are downright south GA country, infused with smokey meat flavor. My main beef is with the lack of presentation for the price paid. For a good sized meal at Champion's, it will set you back $13.99 minimal. For this, you are served your meal stacked in what appears to be some sort of black Styrofoam TV dinner tray, a side of plastic silverware, and a Styrofoam cup with no lid. This is not a food truck, and definitely not food truck prices, so I hope Champion's considers hiring a dishwasher and getting some dinnerware--- even cafeteria quality would do. Eating chunks of Styrofoam with a bendy plastic fork is not appealing. The BBQ places on 4th Street in St Petersburg are a clusterf**k of business listings. Duplicate listings with the same address, but different business name. Missing hours. Oh, and even the images are exchanged for both. For example: you will find photos of Champions BBQ sauce bottles on another BBQ listing. So, these two are the same business and should be merged: yelp.com/biz/fred-flemin… yelp.com/biz/champions-b…

I came here the first time due to an yelp review. I have to say that it is well worth coming, The staff here are so friendly and the food is absolutely delicious. The ribs are fall off the bone tender with the perfect amount of barbecue smoke flavor. I recommend this place 100%

The BBQ here is so tender and juicy. The sides are flavorful. I highly recommend their brisket and ribs!!!! Omg they catered my friends wedding. Also when eating here the ambiance is very friendly and enjoyable. When is Florida the Tampa area definitely come and eat here.

There's Luckie B's across the street that is in direct competition but Champion's has superior BBQ compared, I could eat vats of their pulled pork and ribs. But, yumminess of sides, cool atmosphere, these are things lacking. Get meat by the pound to go instead.

This is the BEST BBQ around. Not just around St. Petersburg, not just around Florida, not just around the South, but I would put this place up against some of the best bbq in the nation (I'm from Kansas) and it would come out on top. Don't expect anything fancy - we're talking a little pink house with plastic utensils and baskets of food, but who needs fancy bbq? It's amazing. The ribs fall of the bone, the beef brisket regularly sells out it's so good and the pork roast is just as good. The sides are all great, too. Our faves are the corn and the mac & cheese, but they really are all great. To seal the deal, the owners are awesome - really fun people. We moved here from MN about a month ago, and we've gotten food from here at least 5 times already. It's now a weekly tradition. Love it!

Have you been to Champions BBQ? If you haven't you're missing out on the best bbq in the St. Petersburg area! I went for the first time back on the 4th of July and have gone every week since then. Having just moved here from MD, I have to honestly say that they are hands down the best ribs I have had, even better than my own and I'm no slough on a grill or in the kitchen. I'm talking fall off the bone, melt in your mouth ribs and all their sides are on point. Not pork and beans but real baked beans and some damn good potato salad, not some store bought stuff. The staff is great and friendly and "mom" is the greatest and a true sweetheart. It's not often you can go someplace and they remember you as you're walking in the door. You're missing out on a truly great experience and some great food, if you haven't stopped by. I know I will be heading back that way every time I can and they already know my order...gotta love this place and the great staff and food, I know I do. Dine in or carry out, either way you're going to get the best ribs and bbq items in the area.

This is hands down my favorite BBQ! I love their pulled pork, brisket and ribs. The star, however, is the smoked turkey breast. Its ah-maz-ing!!!

Fifty dollars and an hour and a half later our food finally arrived. Was the skimpiest $50 worth of BBQ I have ever seen. Have never been so disappointed getting food. My styrofoam box had 2 strips of brisket. Tasted decent but definitely not worth the price or wait. Hit up publix and save yourselves the time, money, and disappointment. $50 later I'm still hungry.

Yummy! Good atmosphere, good bbq. Serves beer, friendly owner/employees, fastpick up or dine in. Delivery takes a while, but arrives when expected.

Top-notch taste and value, consistent for years and years. Only other contender in St Pete area that I've noted as especially worth going to is Smokin' J's in Gulfport. (There are plenty of good rib places in St Pete, just not so many great ones). Ribs are great, chicken is great, corned beef is outstanding. Get the Feast...for $24, I eat a huge, hot, fresh and very varied (chicken, pulled pork, sausage, turkey, corned beef and ribs!) dinner with two sides, then as long as I add my own sides (the sides with the Feast are tiny) have leftovers for (seriously) like three more dinners. In case you didn't see the tip, use the Carolina Mustard Sauce with the smoked sausage and the corned beef...a fabulous little twist on some delicatessen-classic pairings. Champion's has a reuben...may have to do that one of these days, because their corned beef is PHENOMENAL. One of the big reasons I get that Feast platter. Finally, $6.95 for a pitcher of Champion's Lager. It's probably a re-badged Coors Banquet or something...bottom of the barrel foodservice beer, but boy is it good at that price.

Place used to be great. Last three times below average. Last two times were out of what I ordered blamed it on delivery guy. Today's sandwich bread was so dry it crumbled. Turkey was scraps like crumbs u scrape off cutting board. Will not go back.

What great flavor in a little package. The family goes back a bit and I've been to their older restaurant. Maybe they don't own the logo anymore, but they own the flavors. Great turkey wrap and sides and the hot BBQ sauce was savory and just a little heat. Friendly service. Have not been to the other side of the street and I will try it for the comparison, but this place is so good I can't imagine there being better. Don't expect ambiance but cleanliness and good food is a lot for very good prices. C'mon, people. Overlook the tiny building and get some good chow. Take out if you gotta have a great view.

This place is fantastic. We walked in the door about a minute before 8pm, and they were good enough to let us eat without rush. We were served by the owner himself, who was very friendly, and helpful. We wanted to try the Champion Lager (amazingly $1/glass or $3/pitcher), but they were out. The owner gave us the same price for whatever bottled beer we chose. I had the smoked chicken (tender and lovely) and the sausage (good but rich) with mac & cheese (heavenly, esp. with a touch of either hot sauce or pepper vinegar) and the collard greens (a little bitter but still good). My husband had the pulled pork (phenomenal) and the ribs (pretty okay). When the owner came around to tell us about their 5 housemade BBQ sauces (all are awesome), he asked if I liked corned beef, and when I said that I do, he brought me a sample. Oh, that was wonderful. Tender with the right amount of corning. The owner promised that I'll love the Reuben sandwich, which I plan on ordering next time. Even though we stayed past closing time, they did not rush us. They offered us another round of beer. And on our way out, the owner gave me coconut cake to go. I'm looking forward to having room in my stomach again so that I can try it out. I do love when a business is family-owned, and when the owners clearly love what they do.

Passed by this places hundreds of times and finally decided to stop in. I'm glad I did. Place smells great walking through the doors. The staff were really friendly and helpful. I got the ribs, they only have St Louis style and pulled pork. The ribs were tender and flavourful, not overcooked or tough like some have said, they were fall off the bone tender. The pull pork is great one of the better ones I've had in St Pete. While I was waiting for my food the owner brought out some beef brisket for me to try and it was delicious! Their BBQ sauces are really good as well, they have classic, hot, honey and a mustard based sauce. My favorites were the hot and surprisingly the mustard based sauce as it was a little sweeter than other mustard based sauces that I am used to. The only thing I really did not like was the BBQ baked beans, mainly because it was full of golden raisins, I just don't like the texture and taste of raisins with beans. Will definitely be coming back here multiple times.

Champions BBQ v. Lucky B's East West Rumble: Round 1 Ever since coming to St. Pete, I have been asked a question by locals that has confounded me. Are you a Champions or a Lucky B's man? It is almost like asking whether you are from Manhattan or Brooklyn, East side or West side, right side of the tracks or wrong... And everyone, at least in north St. Pete, seems to come down rabidly on one side or the other. But I guess that is what you get in a city as into BBQ as St. Pete is becoming when you place two BBQ joints right across the street from each other in an area full of iconoclast foodies. Culinary war. And so I decided that I must choose a side before I am swept away the angry foodie hordes who can't understand why I haven't tried either. But to decide, I can't just choose one based on name, or colors, side of the road. I had to do a BBQ off. Without the knowledge of each restaurant, we ordered a mixture of ribs, pulled pork, and brisket from each restaurant and set about tasting. I consider these the holy trinity of BBQ. First, I found that Champions had a very convenient sampler that had the trinity included but also some chicken, sausage, and corned beef. For fairness, I skipped these till after the taste test. At Lucky B's we had a bit more trouble and ended up having to order a rib dinner, a half-pound of pulled pork and a half-pound of brisket separately. We also got some sides from each and all were excellent. At this point my wife, my friend Natalya who is also a foodie, and myself all returned home to sample the ridiculous pile of food before us. First the ribs: Ribs are not the end all be all of BBQ like some people think that they are. Some people bake them. They taste good. Some people boil them. They taste good. Some people BBQ with indirect heat. They taste better. Point is that the best ribs that I have had around were in an Irish pub so I will not declare an overall winner based on ribs. But Lucky B's wins this round. Lucky B's had thick, meaty, dry rubbed, tasty ribs. Their sauces were comparable to Champions and were all good. I am partial to their whiskey sauce. But Champion's ribs were over cooked though tender, there was very little meat, they didn't have a visible dry rub, and just looked desiccated. They tasted good though but were unsatisfying because of the lack of meat. The pulled pork was really telling. Here again Lucky B's wins. Lucky B's had almost a chipped consistency without the look of being pulled with a fork. That was a drawback in my book but it was moist, tasty, and enjoyable. It didn't seem seasoned on its own but the sauces made up the difference. With Champions, we frankly had a hard time even telling what was supposed to be pulled pork. We just sort of had 2 or 3 solid masses of tender pork that we had to pull ourselves. But they were dry. The thing about pulled pork is that when pulled you can mix in the juices to flavor it and add in the saltiness that I love. Not being pulled ruined that and it was dry. We also couldn't really taste much smoke in either meat. Then there is the crown jewel of BBQ. The Brisket. Again Lucky B's wins. Both tasted good and had a nice smoky flavor but Champions looked mutilated. It was more pulled than the pork was but was clearly the sliced brisket so I don't know what happened there. It was also dry and fell apart when you tried to eat it so I think it was very overcooked. Lucky B's was tender and falling apart a bit but was less dry though still slightly dry. All in all I still prefer my Smokin J's brisket. Disappointing. But with a little sauce we were right on track. I liked the hot sauce from champions more here. So we can definitively declare Lucky B's the winner. One unexpected highlight though was the corned beef that came with the sampler from Champions was excellent. I don't list this as BBQ but if it was they would win for sure. I will order that again. The sausage was also exceptional. The roasted chicken not so much. It was flavorless and greasy. I don't have a Lucky B's comparison but I was quite happy at this point since I wanted to pop. Either way you get good BBQ. And so I have chosen my side. I am a Lucky B's man. Now will someone please point me toward a cardiologist?!?

Great ribs that fall off the bone! Sides are better then most BBQ joints in the area. Great experience almost every time we go. The only downside for it getting 4 stars is the size of the restaurant is small and could get crowded at times, but the food gets 5 stars.

This food is just OK. Portions are not great. It's certainly not the best BBQ I've ever had, and in fact, I can tell you right now that Smoke Shack in Tampa is a zillion times better. The pulled pork tasted like it was cooked in a crock pot. Mac and cheese was OK. Baked beans were very good. Maybe the ribs are better? Also, it's not cheap.

I ordered the full rack of ribs for delivery via the fantastic 727foodnow service and my biggest complaint is that my rack still had the rib membrane left on. They were not the best ribs I have ever had, but I'm pretty forgiving when it comes to ribs since I don't allow myself to indulge in them that often. But the meal was pretty expensive and the membrane issue meant that with almost every bite I had to try to pick the membrane off myself which really ruined my experience. I know enough about bbq to know that is just not the proper way to prepare ribs, which any decent BBQ place should know. I also found the side portions to be quite small.

This BBQ is the real deal. It's delicious and the owners are awesome. The smoke smell hits you in the parking lot and it's fantastic. The portions are great and the sides are always tasty too. Don't let reviews from people who didn't eat here stop you from going. It's not uncommon for real slow smoked bbq joints to run out of items. It takes hours to make this stuff the right way and i don't think any of us want food that's been cooked days before to make sure they never run out..

First off, let me say upfront, we didn't try the food. First impressions are everything. If you found a cockroach in your salad you would probably immediately walk out. We called to make a to-go order and our call was answered by a human cockroach. It really isn't that hard, even if you hate your job and hate your life, to at least pretend to be polite and attempt to be helpful. Don't be condescending to new customers who have simple questions about your menu. If a customer twice proclaims that they have never eaten there DON'T SCOLD THEM FOR NOT KNOWING THE MENU! Suck it up put a fake smile in your voice and be a useful human being. Also, When you have two other BBQ places that may be just as good all within a block of each other, it might be a good idea to put your best foot forward and not be a creep. The customer will put THEIR best foot forward and go, literally, across the street to your competitor. I'm feeling lazy now so i'll just wrap up by paraphrasing Edward W's review... just attempted to have my first meal from Champion BBQ and it was infuriating my mind is still dancing with sadness from the lack of standards and human decency. As my imaginary daughter would say "any where but there." Its doesn't stand a chance of making my speed dial and I will raise a finger to salute you as I drive by.

I was at an event in Hyde Park Village where Champions BBQ had a tent set up. I witnessed a man, who I assume was Champions' owner, absolutely go ballistic on one of the event's attendees who was waiting in line. Based on the yelling and screaming of Champions' owner, it seems that the patron did not accept one of the restaurant flyers out of the owner's hand fast enough for the owner's liking. The owner cussed out the patron and instructed his workers not to serve the man any BBQ. Well, the patron stayed in line as the owner walked off. Upon the patron being served at the front of the line anyway, the owner got in the face of the patron again and began yelling some more. He claimed the patron did not grab the offered flyer (true - at least not fast enough) and that the patron cut in line (not true - I was a couple of people behind him the entire wait). The owner, seeming proudly, then exclaimed for all to hear, "That's right. I'm a D!@k! I'm a D!@k!" He certainly was right about that so I left the line in disgust even though I had just about made it to the front of the line. Therefore, I can't comment on the BBQ but I can tell you that this jerk of an owner doesn't deserve a dime of your hard earned cash.

When I'm in the mood for BBQ there isn't a lot of options on 4th street. So I decided to try this place for lunch. I ordered a BBQ platter of half smoked chicken, baked beans and slaw. I must say I was impressed. The chicken was perfect, and the BBQ beans are seasoned just right! Love the beans and the BBQ sauce. I'll be coming back for sure!

After some recent visits I have to upgrade this place a few stars. Food is good, service is good and the older woman who is always there running the place is very nice.
